The need for perfection has never been as great as it is today. Is the desire to be perfect stopping you from achieving your goals?

Achieving your goals is important. Creative people are driven by the need to share their art and thanks to social media, there has never before been the opportunity to syndicate our work on such a scale. However, as Sir Isaac Newton’s third law beautifully points out; every action has an equal and opposite reaction and we should therefore prepare ourselves to be bombarded by critics. Most of which are likely to be “keyboard warriors” who haven’t taken the effort to understand just how difficult the creative process can be.

I have been a professional musician since 1992 and my output has developed as I have and I hope it will continue thus. I have however taken a five-year hiatus from releasing vlogs and the like due to my own anxieties. The bad wolf within me is constantly talking to me:

What if it isn’t good enough? What if nobody likes it? I can always do better if I practice harder.

This need for perfection has never been as great as it is today. Be it the perfect groove, the perfect body or the perfect performance. This desire for perfection can crush our self worth and lead to procrastination and perhaps a cessation of trying to achieve anything.

In this video, taken from the series “A to Z of working in and surviving the modern music industry” that I produced, I touch upon quality and how it improves as our journey progresses.

Don’t worry! Life is a journey and it should be enjoyed. Please celebrate who you are and remember why it is that you do what you do – play music, dance, act, participate in sport – however you choose to further yourself, please keep going! Believe me, isn’t isn’t easy for me to practice what I preach but I would rather fight the good fight than quit.
